The world’s first Bas Relief stamps were issued February 27, 1971
The process originated in Italy and shows a raised effect of the subject matter which gives if depth dimension, plus the highlighting created by the four color lithograph method. The stamps were placed in hand engraved stainless steel pressure heat molds and pressed to desired shapes. The subject matter “History of Sculpture” was specially chosen because the printers through unique color blending could simulate to a remarkable degree the actual shading of famous antique masterpieces. A removable self-adhesive paper backing was place on each stamp.
